Do you have frizzy hair as soon as you leave the door? Very recognizable, but there are ways to prevent it. For some it’s not a problem, but if you’ve spent hours in front of your mirror for defined curls or perfectly straight hair, frizz is the last thing you want. Here are some hacks you can do to get rid of frizzy hair.
Try a Pre-poo treatment to prevent frizzy hair
A pre-poo is a pre-shampoo treatment. A treatment you do before washing your hair. Although it takes quite some time, pre-poo treatments, has many advantages. It initially ensures that your hair retains much more moisture after washing. This keeps you hair more moisturized. Especially if you use heat on your hair or (flat iron or curling wand) a pre-poo is recommended. Also, a pre-poo is often used to compensate for certain ingredients (such as SLS) in shampoos. Many shampoos contain sulfates. These shampoos are doing a good job at cleansing your hair, but also remove your natural hair oil, which makes your hair very dry and frizzy after washing.
A good pre-poo treatment contains a nutrient oil, such as Jamaican Black Castor oil. Absolutely our favorite oil, for various reasons. Heat the oil (you can also mix it with other oils, such as coconut oil and olive oil) and apply it from roots to tip. Let it sit all night and wash your hair with shampoo the next day. You will really notice the difference!
Co wash only
A few years ago their weren’t many sulfate free shampoos on the market. Washing your hair with conditioners became the alternative. A conditioner cleans hair, but does not remove the natural hair oil, which makes your hair feel dry after washing. In addition, many conditioners contain nutrient oils.
Try washing your hair for a month with a conditioner and you will notice that you have a lot less frizzy hair.
Cold water rinse
After washing your hair, it is important to rinse your hair with cold water. Why? If you wash your hair, you will most likely use warm water. That’s fine. Warm water causes your hair cuticles to raise, so the dirt can be washed out. However, if your hair cuticles are raised, your hair loses moisture. That’s why you’ll have to make sure your hair cuticles are laying as flat as possible. And that’s something cold water does. It also provide shiny hair and of course less frizzy hair.
Choose a good moisturizer
Choose a good moisturizer for your hair. A leave-in conditioner could also do the trick, but a moisturizer is just a bit thicker and more intense and moisturize just a little more. A good moisturizer contains water, different oils and a hair butter such as shea butter or cocoa butter. Always use the moisturizer after washing on damp hair. This will dry well in your hair and will frizz your hair less quickly.
Use a t-shirt or microfiber towel
Don’t use your regular towel to dry your hair after washing it. It will suck all the moisture out of your hair and make it frizzy. A t-shirt or microfiber towel works so much better to prevent frizz. It’s much milder for your hair and also doesn’t absorb moisture. You will notice that your hair is dry, but still contains it’s moisture level.
Try a diffuser
Although we don’t promote to much use of heat, a diffuser is something that could help you get red of frizzy hair. A diffuser is an attachment for your hair dryer, specially designed to give your curls more definition and volume. But it also prevents frizzy hair and works much better than a drying cap. A diffuser is easy to use.
- Apply your styling products on damp hair
- Hang your hair sideways or upside down
- Start diffusing with cool air (if your settings are to hot, you will get frizz)
- Stop diffusing once your hair is 90% dry
- Add a little of your favorite curling cream
