Coconut oil is made from the pulp of coconut, but only the fat content is retained. There are no proteins and carbohydrates in it. About 68% of saturated fat in coconut oil consists of medium chain fatty acids. The major part of this is lauric acid, which has bactericidal and antiviral properties. Lauric acid prevents hair loss. In addition, coconut oil has a high moisture retention capacity, because it retains and moisturizes the hair.
Coconut oil for hair
Coconut oil has become a very populair oil for hair. There are a lot of hair products that have coconut oil on their ingredient list. But most of them are mixed with other ingredients that are harmful for your hair. Therefor avoid these products and only mix coconut oil with your favorite natural hair products or just create your own hair products, so you know exactly what’s in it.
Types of coconut oil
If you’re planning on using coconut oil for hair, you should know the difference between 2 types of coconut oil:
1.Pure or virgin coconut oil:
This is unrefined coconut oil. It’s either produced form pressing the oil out of dried coconut or through a wet-mill process. With the dried coconut technique, the coconut meat is dried first before the oil is pressed out of the coconut. Using the wet-mill technique, the coconut meat is processed into coconut milk first. The oil is separated from the milk by boiling, straining or fermenting.
Benefits of unrefined coconut oil are that it retains more coconut flavor and it has the highest levels of antioxidants.
2. Refined coconut oil:
Refined coconut oil is made form dried coconut oil (copra). They also call this type of oil ‘RBD coconut oil”, which stands for: refines, bleached, deodorized. The meat of the coconut has been bleached and steamed to reduce potential bacteria in the coconut oil and to deodorize the oil.
Unrefined (virgin) coconut oil is higher in antioxidants then refined coconut oil. That doesn’t mean refined coconut oil is unhealthy. You can still use it. If you want to enjoy all the benefits of coconut oil you should use unrefined coconut oil.
